Fair Lending Compliance Associate

Relman, Dane & Colfax, a civil rights law firm, is accepting applications for a fair lending compliance associate position in its Washington, DC, office.

Overview

Relman, Dane & Colfax litigates fair housing, fair lending, public accommodations, police accountability, and employment discrimination cases. We represent individuals, classes, and civil rights organizations in plaintiff-side civil rights litigation alleging discrimination or harassment on the basis of race, national origin, color, religion, sex, disability, age, familial status, source of income, and sexual orientation.

The Firm also provides legal counsel to progressive companies that demonstrate a commitment to best practices in the way they conduct business. Such counsel includes representation of financial institutions in reporting to their regulators on fair lending and fair servicing issues. We conduct investigations and provide counselling regarding consumer protection, privacy, lending, employment, whistleblower, and federal regulatory matters. Our practice also includes analysis and strategy regarding public policy issues and proposed legislation affecting civil rights.

Responsibilities

The associate will counsel financial institutions on compliance with fair lending and consumer protection laws. Responsibilities associated with the position include managing compliance matters, interacting with institutional clients, analyzing client data, working with statistical experts, and preparing presentations to regulators. The level of responsibility will depend upon the experience of the applicant.

Experience and Qualifications

The Firm especially seeks applicants with fair lending litigation or compliance experience. Applicants should have a demonstrated commitment to civil rights enforcement, strong academic credentials, superior research, writing, and verbal skills, and client management experience. A background in statistics or experience with the use of statistics in discrimination cases is preferred.

Litigation Senior Associate/Litigation Counsel

While there are no formal openings at this time, Relman, Dane & Colfax is always searching for talented, committed lawyers to join its Washington, DC office litigation team.   

Responsibilities

The Firm is open to applications from both lawyers with significant litigation experience who are prepared to handle a civil rights litigation caseload without supervision, and newer attorneys.  Associates are involved in all phases of federal and state litigation, including investigating potential cases, preparing complaints, drafting briefs on dispositive motions and other motions practice, handling discovery including taking and defending depositions, conducting oral argument, and conducting trials.  In addition, senior associates/counsel work in conjunction with the Firm’s junior lawyers, and should have the experience and skills necessary to mentor less experienced attorneys.  Senior associates/counsel also work with the Firm’s partners on major strategic issues in their cases and report to the Firm’s partners regarding litigation progress.

Experience and Qualifications

Applicants should have a demonstrated commitment to civil rights enforcement, strong academic credentials, superior research, writing, and verbal skills, and the ability to carry a varied caseload.  A minimum of six years of litigation experience is preferred for those applying as senior associates/counsel.  A clerkship and/or at least one year of litigation experience is preferred for those applying as junior associates.

Relman Civil Rights Fellowship

Applications for the 2015-2016 Relman Civil Rights Fellowship will be due October 17, 2014.

Each year, the Relman Civil Rights Fellowship offers one talented and committed new attorney the opportunity to litigate important civil rights cases with experienced practitioners at Relman, Dane & Colfax. We created this one-year fellowship to help us provide clients with legal services of the highest quality while promoting social justice through vigorous enforcement of our nation's civil rights laws.

Relman Civil Rights Fellows work closely with the firm's attorneys on cutting-edge cases in civil rights law. Fellows are deeply involved in all aspects and stages of litigation, from developing and investigating cases, interviewing clients, drafting pleadings, conducting discovery and appearing in court. Past fellows have gone on to pursue exciting and fulfilling careers as civil rights lawyers and public defenders.

Recent law graduates and judicial clerks whose clerkships are ending in 2015 are eligible to apply for the 2015-2016 Relman Civil Rights Fellowship. Applicants for the Fellowship should have a demonstrated commitment to civil rights issues; strong academic credentials; superior analytical, research, writing, and verbal skills; a desire to litigate; the ability to balance a varied case load; and Bar membership pending or obtained prior to the start date of the Fellowship.

Applications for the 2015-2016 Relman Civil Rights Fellowship must be received no later than October 17, 2014. Opportunities for Summer Associates

Summer associates provide important assistance in many of the firm's cases, including drafting discovery and briefs, interviewing witnesses and drafting declarations, conducting research, and investigating the claims of individuals seeking representation from the firm.  Summer associates have frequent opportunities to attend hearings, mediations, depositions, and press conferences.

Opportunities for Paralegals

Paralegals are an integral part of the litigation process at Relman, Dane & Colfax.  They interview individuals seeking representation from the firm; conduct factual investigations; review client and discovery documents; assist in preparation of legal briefs and client presentations and preparation for trials; communicate with clients and witnesses; and conduct various administrative tasks.  Paralegals have opportunities to attend strategy sessions, client meetings, depositions, hearings, trials, and press conferences.

Relman, Dane & Colfax will be accepting applications beginning December 1, 2014.  We will be seeking paralegals to begin a two-year commitment in early summer 2015.
